Philosophy

The aim of the present article is to provide some aspects of an important quarrel on the nature of space, namely, the one between Leibniz and Newton. We’ll argue here that there is a necessity in each one of the projects (i.e., the Leibnizian and the Newtonian) for both thinkers to conceive space as they did. On the one hand, Leibniz defended the concept of relative space, which was nothing more than the result of the relation between the positions of things in space; otherwise his thesis of ontological autonomy of the monads would simply fail. Newton, on the other hand, defended the concept of absolute space, which was nothing more than a previous condition enabling the existence of physical bodies; moreover it was an irrevocably prerequisite to the first law of movement

Neste artigo nos propomos como tarefa apresentar, discutir e
avaliar a importância do Opúsculo de 1768 às origens da filosofia
crítica. Teremos como tema específico a ser tratado aqui o espaço
cujo foi, sem sombra de dúvidas, um dos mais caros assuntos
na doutrina kantiana em seu viés teórico. Para alcançar os objetivos
esperados, optamos por dividir nosso texto em duas partes:
na primeira, mais descritiva, apresentaremos os principais
movimentos do referido escrito de Kant (no total são quarto);
na segunda, faremos alguns apontamentos às possíveis contribuições,
outrossim alguns problemas, do mesmo tendo em vista
a doutrina madura do filósofo de Königsberg, particularmente
aquela acerca do espaço.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo investigar o tema do espaço em dois anos na carreira acadêmica de Kant, a saber, 1768 e 1769. Incontestavelmente, esse breve período colaborou de modo decisivo à doutrina madura do filósofo com respeito ao tema em questão, conforme pretendemos mostrar nesta dissertação. Desse modo, a fim de realizar tal tarefa, foi feita a divisão em três etapas. Num primeiro momento, será exposto o contexto no qual esse assunto encontra-se inserido, pretendendo-se tratar de certos aspectos das posições de Leibniz e Newton em torno à temática, bem como da influência de ambos em alguns dos primeiros escritos do filósofo de Königsberg. Em seguida, no capítulo 2, será exposto o opúsculo de 1768, um conhecido escrito de Kant em que ele rompe definitivamente com uma noção de espaço defendida em sua juventude: a noção de espaço relativo, passando a aceitar a tese newtoniana de espaço absoluto. Finalmente, no capítulo 3, a partir de uma breve, porém célebre Reflexão do filósofo, será exposta a descoberta de uma nova e determinante teoria acerca do espaço. Esta, diferente tanto daquela primeira (i.e., a do jovem Kant) quanto da outra encontrada no opúsculo de 1768, mostrando-se, pois, desta vez uma doutrina mais próxima ao que diz Kant sobre o espaço, por exemplo, na “Estética Transcendental” da Crítica da Razão Pura.

In this paper we aim to expose and to analyze some important features in the context of Cassirer's epistemology in his first major work Substanzbegriff und Funktionsbegriff (1910), specifically on the problematic relationship between philosophy and science in 19 th century. To fulfill our task we opt to proceed in this way: we shall start announcing the problem faced in this period; then we pass to treat the philosophical heritages; in a third moment we shall deal with the scientific legacies, and finally we shall conclude the article with some remarks on the importance of the two referred moments to the origins of Cassirer's philosophical project. RESUMO Neste artigo propomo-nos expor e analisar alguns importantes aspectos do contexto epistemológico de Cassirer em sua primeira grande obra Substanzbegriff und Funktionsbegriff (1910), especificamente acerca da problemática relação da filosofia com a ciência no século XIX. A fim de cumprirmos nossa tarefa, optamos por proceder desta maneira: iniciaremos anunciando o problema enfrentado nesse período; a partir daí passaremos a tratar as heranças filosóficas; em um terceiro momento trabalharemos os legados científicos e, finalmente, concluiremos o artigo com algumas considerações sobre a importância dos dois momentos referidos às origens do projeto filosófico cassireriano.

Resumo: O presente artigo tem por objetivo investigar o tema do espaço em dois anos do arcabouço teórico do filósofo Immanuel Kant: 1768 e 1769. Ainda que se trate de apenas alguns poucos anos dentro de uma carreira intelectual que ocupou décadas, defenderemos a tese de que foi exatamente nesse período específico em que se encontram mudanças decisivas por parte do filósofo no que se refere a determinadas  posições defendidas por ele mesmo em seus textos anteriores aos anos que nós exploraremos aqui, por um lado, e, por outro, a descoberta de problemas nos quais o tema do espaço desempenha um papel fundamental. Para a realização de tal tarefa, optamos por proceder da seguinte maneira: primeiramente trataremos do Opúsculo de 1768, sobre as direções do espaço, escrito em que Kant rompe em definitivo com a noção de espaço relativo (a qual remonta, em última análise, ao nome de Leibniz), e passa a aceitar a tese newtoniana de espaço absoluto. Feito isso, apontaremos ainda para as possíveis contribuições do mencionado texto à posteridade do pensamento de Kant, bem como, determinados problemas lá contidos em vista do que o filósofo diria acerca do espaço nos anos subsequentes. Em um próximo passo, a partir da Reflexão 5037, será exposta uma nova compreensão por parte de Kant: dessa vez, um tanto diferente do Opúsculo de 1768, mostrando-se uma doutrina muito mais próxima daquela defendida pelo filósofo em seus textos do período crítico.

Abstract: The present paper aims to investigate the space theme in two years inside Immanuel Kant’s theoretical framework: 1768 and 1769. Though it treats of just a couple of years among an intellectual career occupied by several decades, we defend the thesis that it was precisely in this specific period that we find some changes from Kant’s part concerning positions claimed by himself in his writings before these years which we intend to explore here, on the one hand, and, from another, the discovering of problems in which the space theme
plays a fundamental role. To fulfill such task, we opt to proceed this way: firstly we’ll treat the 1768 opuscule, on the directions of space, written in which Kant breaks definitively with the notion of relative space (which goes back, ultimately, to the name of Leibniz), and passes to accept the Newtonian thesis of absolute space. From this, we’ll point out to the possible contributions of the refereed text to Kant’s posterity, as well, some problems there contained in view of what the philosopher would say about space in the following years. In the next step, from Reflection 5037, it will be expose Kant’s new understanding: this time, a little bit different from the 1768 opuscule, showing a doctrine closer from that defended by the philosopher on his critical period.

In this article we aim to explore some aspects on Ernst Cassirer's logicism. In order to fulfill such task, we will initiate our analyses with the reception of the logicist thesis in the origins of Cassirer's theoretical context, showing firstly the importance assumed by the mentioned thesis in two of its most important figures (Frege and Russell) and, secondly, to show Cassirer's critique on then and his defense on Dedekind. Then, we will resume the role played by Cassirer's predecessors in Marburg (Cohen and Natorp) and their innovators Transcendental Method and Transcendental Logic on the sui generis Logicism of our author. Resumo: Pretendemos neste artigo explorar alguns aspectos em torno ao logicismo de Ernst Cassirer. Para tanto, iniciaremos nossa análise com a recepção da tese logicista nas origens do contexto teórico cassireriano, mostrando primeiramente a importância assumida pela mencionada tese em dois de seus principais expoentes (Frege e Russell) e, em segundo lugar, a crítica de Cassirer a estes e sua defesa a Dedekind. Em seguida retomaremos o papel desempenhado pelos predecessores de Cassirer em Marburgo (Cohen e Natorp) e seus inovadores Método transcendental e Lógica transcendental dentro do logicismo sui generis de nosso autor.

Resumo: Pretendemos neste artigo expor, avaliar e discutir os aspectos centrais da noção de "método transcendental". Para isso, desenvolveremos nossa argumentação da seguinte maneira: primeiramente, trataremos de responder qual foi legado de Kant e sua filosofia transcendental aos representantes do movimento neokantiano da escola de Marburgo, no intervalo que se deu entre o primeiro e os segundos. Feito isso, direcionaremos particular atenção ao pensamento de Ernst Cassirer: mostrando seu lugar dentro da mencionada escola e suas diferenças com relação a seus antecessores. Num próximo passo, faremos uma comparação entre o "método transcendental" com outros dois métodos em voga naquele mesmo período. Concluiremos este trabalho expondo e discutindo o caráter sui generis da proposta metodológica cassireriana e do kantismo presente em sua epistemologia juvenil. Abstract: In this article we aim to expose, to evaluate and to discuss the central features of the concept of "transcendental method". In order to fulfill such task, we'll develop our argumentation in the following way: firstly, we'll answer the question about the legacy of Kant's transcendental philosophy to the members of the Neo-Kantianism of Marburg, in the framework context among them. That made, we'll focus our attention particularly on Ernst Cassirer's thought: showing his place inside the mentioned school and his differences in relation to his antecessors. In a next step, we'll make a comparison between the "transcendental method" and two other methods in use at that time. We'll conclude this work exposing and discussing the sui generis character of Cassirer's methodological approach and the Kantian features in his early epistemology.

This work propose a theoretical model of the neurophenomenological time in terms of an bayesian-enactive approach of the multiple drafting operations realized by the embodied-embedded brain/mind dynamical system. Since time is processed and encoded in various scales in the brain, firstly I´ll indicate hypothetically the probable localization of the neurophenomenological time within the range of these brain-time scales and how probably brain organization enables the phenomenal-time formation. My hypothesis is that, in the level of brain analysis, neurophenomenological time constitute a specific mode of global workspace dynamic system generated by specific integrational brain-time mechanisms and a specific forward emulator model. In a second moment, I´ll analyse the “internal” functional constitution of phenomenological time, and my special interest here is related to how the apprehensional interpreter-functions (that involves cognitive, kinesthetic and emotional features) of consciousness perceptually organizes and is influenced by non-conceptual sensations in the context of the retentional-impressional-protentional integrated dynamics, which intentionally produce specious present. In a third moment, I´ll neurophenomenologically reinterpret the multiple drafts model (avoiding the apparent incompatibilities present here). I´ll argue that the multiple drafts model is a dynamical system that can subsume (with modifications) the lag-fixed smoother model and the moving window emulator model in the context of a bayesian-enactive approach of the protentional functioning and a sensorimotor approach of the working memory-based functioning of retentions. I'll argue that these theoretical syntheses require a embodied-embedded biosemiosis realized by sense-making performances that incessantly produce interpretations generated in the interplay between retentional deepenings/a posteriori revaluations, perceptually present sensations and bayesian protentional mapping of prepredicative proto-inductive estimations. I´ll conclude considering the basic enactive properties of that embodied-embedded biosemiosis which enables the type of sense-making proper to the neurophenomenological time. I´ll sustain that neurophenomenological time is a operational closure function of a enactive organism.

Neste trabalho pretende-se analisar em que medida Husserl fornece um rico arcabouço de subsídios conceituais para a fundamentação metodológica e epistemológica de uma concepção sistemática da unidade estrutural dos modos de experimentação do mundo pela (inter)subjetividade. A possibilidade da interconexão estrutural dos estratos de experiência será articulada a partir da análise dos mecanismos genético-fenomenológicos de formação das estruturas experienciais. Tais mecanismos operam na esfera dos sistemas cinestésico-estesiológicos tanto quanto na esfera fluída da temporalidade imanente da consciência e na esfera dos processos inter-subjetivos fundantes da comunidade sócio-histórica. A fim de compreendermos a natureza específica da gênese fenomenológica, analisaremos tanto os métodos genético e estático elaborados por Husserl, quanto as fundamentais inter-relações das suas teorias acerca da relação entre o todo e a parte (mereologia), da lógica dos sinais (semiose) e da ontologia (regional e formal); com isto em perspectiva, poderemos compreender melhor em que sentido a fenomenologia trata das múltiplas estruturações de sentidos e complexos de sentidos e como tais estruturações implicam uma morfodinâmica noético-noemática articulada espacial e temporalmente numa rede interconectada de experiências (desde a experiência natural ante-predicativa propriamente dita até as experiências sócio-culturais implicadas nas ações linguisticas, cognitivas, predicativas, éticas, estéticas etc.). A estrutura da consciência em sua totalidade, enquanto processo intencional-corpóreo-social operado por leis de motivação que possibilitam a gênese de unidades significativas a partir de múltiplas e progressivas configurações fenomênicas (noético-noemáticas), é uma matriz morfodinâmica constituinte de campos de sentido. Tal morfodinâmica noético-noemática e seus mecanismos genéticos serão melhor compreendidos se analisarmos como se engendram, em função dos mecanismos de sínteses passivas e ativas, de atos fundantes e fundados, os nexos fenomenológicos entre sensações ou dados hiléticos, percepção, sentimentos, desejos, vontade, imaginação, representação, memória, corpo, linguagem, racionalidade e inter-subjetividade.  Como fio condutor das análises, propomos o seguinte esquema. Inicialmente será abordada a estrutura do processo de constituição fenomenológica do tempo e como nesta dinâmica a subjetividade se auto-origina. Em seguida, se analisará a gênese das experiências perceptivas tanto originárias quanto contemplativo-ativas, focando as inter-relações entre sensação, sentimento, desejo, vontade, memória, representações intuitivas, imaginação, linguagem, razão e corpo, visando com isso não só conceber a estrutura das sínteses passivas e ativas geradoras dos sentidos ou unidades objetivas fundantes e fundadas da experiência, mas também como a espacialidade é configurada em tais dinâmicas quase-intencionais e intencionais. Estas análises da constituição fenomenológica da experiência perceptivo-espacial-temporal serão confrontadas com o processo de formação do mundo cultural humano, o que incluirá o modo como este último se diferencia do mundo material e do mundo animal. A partir deste contexto e à maneira de síntese, será investigado o estatuto ontológico da subjetividade transcendental e o modo como ele está co-determinado pela constituição da experiência intersubjetiva. Com este arcabouço interpretativo em mãos, pretende-se analisar as implicações do surgimento da questão ontológica do mundo da vida na obra tardia de Husserl.

This work proposes a theoretical model of prereflexive self-consciousness based on neurophenomenological-enactive approach that hypothesizes multiple drafting temporal (co)operations as embodied-embedded processes that constitute and regulate the phenomenal prereflexive experience of own body. In other hand, I´ll argue that phenomenal prereflexive experience of own body have too an crucial influence on the constitution and regulation of the functioning of multiple draftings operations. Firstly, I´ll consider hypothetically the probable integrational brain mechanisms that maps the mereological constitution of body and that regulate the network of functions that constitutes the body schema. Secondly, I´ll consider hypothetically how these brain networks of implicit spatiality and agency of own body enables the emergence of body image functions relevant to the phenomenal experience of own body, specially the distinction between the sense of ownership and the sense of agency. But I´ll hypothesize that body schema and body image mutually constrains each other, although not in all of possible conditions. Thirdly, I´ll consider how the generation of the mutual relations between body schema and body image is regulated by the temporal functions and patterns of embodied-embedded multiple drafts (co)operations. The embodied-embedded nature of these temporal neurophenomenological operations indicates that these operations depend in ultimate instance on (individual and intersubjective) rythmic/arrhythmic cycles of sensorimotor and affective patterns, whose primary multi-level dynamics generate an ongoing feedback/feedfoward systems. In this context I´ll also consider the possibility of a specific forward emulator model for bodily-agentive phenomenal self-consciousness. In that dynamical framework, the prereflexive self-consciousness is constitued and mantained at many co-ordinated levels of organization (bodily, enactive, situated/extended, affective, cognitive, perceptive, phenomenal and neurological levels), which composes interrelated functions of self-referential models that the organism builds as one of its most important sets of operational clousure functions. I´ll conclude defending that prereflexive self-consciousness is a specific level of a more abrangent organismic self-referential system, which includes other types of self-referential functions and whose functioning depends on its relations to other non-self-referential organismic systems (transitive states/processes).
